When one thinks of Miller & Carter, a chain restaurant, it’s easy to jump to conclusions. With over 116 branches and boasting the sale of over a million steaks annually, one might expect a cookie-cutter experience. However, the steakhouse located in Liverpool’s historic Albert Dock offers a pleasant surprise.

Beyond the Brand

Despite being part of the massive hospitality company, Mitchells & Butlers, which also owns brands like Harvester and All Bar One, Miller & Carter stands out. The steakhouse promises full traceability from field to fork, ensuring all their beef comes from British farms and undergoes a meticulous aging process.

The Albert Dock Experience

The ambiance at the Liverpool branch is inviting. Nestled within redbrick warehouse buildings, the restaurant offers a serene view of the water through its plate-glass wall. The staff, cheerful and genuine, add to the overall pleasant experience, making patrons feel right at home.

Deciphering the Menu

The menu, elegantly presented on a thick cream-colored card, is concise yet comprehensive. While the front showcases starters and the “steak experience,” the back reveals an array of main courses. The steaks, available in classic cuts like sirloin, rib-eye, rump, and fillet, come with specific cooking recommendations. However, the highlight is the Butchers Block 26oz, a combination of rib-eye, fillet, rump, and a marrow bone filled with brisket, enough to satiate two to three steak enthusiasts.

Taste Test Verdict

The steaks? They’re impressive. Cooked to perfection, they offer a delightful sear on the outside and a tender pink inside. The beef dripping gravy accompanying the steak is a standout, rich and flavorful. However, while the gravy shines, some accompaniments like the b√©arnaise sauce and the “onion loaf” fall short. The halloumi fries and bacon crumb also leave room for improvement.

Price Point Analysis

Comparing Miller & Carter to renowned steakhouse Hawksmoor, the prices are competitive. While both charge around £12 per 100g for fillet, Miller & Carter offers additional sides like an iceberg wedge, a sauce, and fries within the steak price, making it a more economical choice.

Final Thoughts

While Miller & Carter might not replace your favorite local steakhouse, it offers a commendable dining experience, especially for those not residing near high-end steakhouses. The key is to choose wisely from the menu.
